Group Reflection:
In our Natural Disasters class in Salt Lake Community College, we were assigned a service learning project to talk to a group of seniors about natural disasters. Our assignment is to talk to the seniors about certain disasters, how they form and why they happen. We tell them how to mitigate a disaster, to be prepared and recover after.
In this group, we were assign to the Kearns Senior Center in Kearns Utah. We decided to present a power point and speak in front of the seniors. Cody Hall was our presentation leader. Our scheduler, Mindy Lopez, contacted the manager of the center, Tim Tomer. We were set to present for the seniors on the 22nd of October at 10am.
Before our presentation, we had to do class assignments for our natural disasters class. Each week we had to give updates on how we plan to present for the seniors. The task master of the group, Noel Lopez, made sure every assignment was completed and turned in on time. We all trusted him with our grade and we are proud of him that he didn’t let us down. Aileen Montoya was our advertising person. She created a wonderful advertisement that was posted all over the senior center. For our presentation, were assigned to give out handouts for the seniors. Our handout lead person, Marisela Maez suggested to give out small emergency kits for the seniors, so they can be prepared if a disaster were to happen.
The day finally came for us to present to the seniors. It was on a Thursday, which was a very slow day at the senior center. Not a lot of seniors attended to our presentation, but it made it a lot easier for us. In our presentation, we discussed different types of disasters that happen in the state of Utah. Such as blizzards, fires, floods and earthquakes. With a power point that was made by Noel, him and Cody talked about how and why they happened. Aileen and Marisela both took turns discussing about how to be prepared for each of these disasters. In the end, Mindy closed out our presentation by discussing the emergency kits to the seniors. The kits came with bottled waters, matches, burning gel, lights, etc.
Once our presentation ended, we earned a small applause from the seniors. We all felt like they didn’t listen to us, but we found out we had more seniors listening to us than we thought. There were about a seven seniors in the room where we did our presentation, but there was another room next door that had other seniors sewing. Surprisingly, they were also listening to us while they were sewing. It worked out for all of us. Before we had left the center, we decided to stay and chat to the seniors to get to know them better. It was fun having conversations with them and learning about their young years. Our jobs were done and we all sure did had a great time with the seniors.
PERSONAL REFLECTION:
I’m not really a group person. Every time I’m set up with a group for a project that’s worth a huge percentage of our grade, I don’t get excited. Most of the time I become the only one to do all the work, others do some or nothing at all. For this natural disasters class, I was once again assigned into a group for a service learning project. This time it’s about presenting to senior senators about natural disasters. As always, I was not excited.
I was assigned to the Kearns, Utah Senior Center. I had four other group members, Kody Hall, Mindy Lopez, Marisela Maez and Aileen Montoya. I was surprised how fast we got started. The group members was assigned their own parts of the project, including me. I was the task master, my job was to be the one to turn in all the written assignments, updates of how we are doing and the power point presentation. It does sound like I’m doing the all the work again, but this time I really wasn’t. Each of the other group members did their own work. We were actually doing everything on time and we were the first group to present to the seniors.
Once presentation day came, we all practiced and were prepared to show the seniors what he wanted to talked to them about. Hilariously, there wasn’t many seniors at the centers. We counted 7 total. Which put less stress on me and the group. We presented as planned, Kody and I were the lead presenters, Marisela and Aileen did their jobs about disasters prevention and Mindy closed it off, talking about emergency kits.
I loved my group, they trusted me with their grade and the cheered me on to do the work. I wish I had more groups like this. Everyone did a great job and I am very proud of them. Our presentation could have been way better, but were all satisfied as a one.
